ever changing, yet still the same

Back in 1967 trams disappeared from the city, to be replaced by buses and cars in the name of Progress. A couple of months ago they returned as the heritage tramway to Djurgården was symbolically extended to Sergel Square in the immediate city center with new tramcars and regular traffic to commence all year round.

Such is the face of Stockholm. Ever changing, yet still the same.

the ending really? I can understand why, but still......

End of pixels today? What does that mean?

They did the same in Paris. Now we have new trams sprouting up everywhere. I love this night shot.

Great shot. We are waiting for new trams in DC.

I have been wondering about that message for some time. Are you shutting down your blog? I have really enjoyed it and will be sad to see you go. :(

As for the trams, it seems that we are often looking to the past for ideas for the future. Trams are "retro cool" now.

It wasn't an easy decision and we've been contemplating our options for a while. Tomorrow morning it'll feel really odd, with no new blog post to check and double-check for the editor-in-residence...

Ineke: So it is...

cieldequimper: The revenge of trams near and far! There won't be any new pixels from us tomorrow...

Luis Gomez: Good for you. More trams!

Halcyon: "Retro cool" is a good expression but they're also practical. Studies have shown that a tram appears to have more authority in traffic jam and is consequently less vulnerable to delays. Yes, we're closing for updates. We have enjoyed this adventure too but five years is a long time.

Thanks all for your support.

We had a good service of trams and trolleys then, then everything disappeared for the obnoxious buses. Now they are talking to bring trams back, like many other cities have already done.

We'll miss you!!!!

You do these night shots so well!

One of the worst things many of our cities did was get rid of the trams (streetcars) some years ago in favor of gas-polluting cars and buses!

oh no! just as i was beginning to admire fotos of Stockholm and more! ^0^
so that's what the header's all about...

we'll truly miss your blog!
it will never be the same again. ^-^

and the parting shot's remarkable and unforgettable.

i still have to ride this tram, one of those little treats to look forward to.

how strange and empty not to have you guys roaming the streets of stockholm (for this blog anyway). it's been a treat knowing you this way too. thanks for all these years!

The blog will remain online for a while and comments will be enabled although probably moderated.

VP: I can't imagine a better way to get a taste of a new city than plunging out into rush hour aboard a tram. I've been criss-crossing Rome this way and it was magic.

Halcyon: A big hug for those kind words! I'm sure our roads will cross somehow in this weird blogosphere.

Jacob: So, we're practically unanimous in support of trams here. Rise of the trams! Would that make a good title for a blockbuster movie? :)

arabesque: Your support has been much appreciated. (I can let you in on a secret about this last shot. It was beginning to rain, I didn't have a tripod and ideas were running out. So I put the camera on top of my soft bag and took a chance on it remaining still for a while. That's called luck.)

Pia K: And many thanks for your being there and - not least - carrying out the important, traditional task of officiating at New Year's Day for us!

Better stop now folks, I'm getting sentimental tonight.

I visit the site often, but don't comment as much as I want to. I am a Texan who has a fascination with Sweden. I have enjoyed your blog so much because even though I’ve never been to your beautiful city, I feel that I've gotten to know Stockholm better because of this site. I will miss it so very much. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. To all the Swedish folks, you are so wonderful and I’ve enjoyed each and every one of your comments.
