daily photo theme day: graffiti

.
Graffiti is not really a city thing in Stockholm. Never has been. We don't have the spaces for it. Tags (namewriting) are found everywhere though. But the theme says Graffiti - not taging. Graffiti is mostly found in Suburbia. So I went there, for the first time in many years. I used to be very fond of this kind of motive and have thousands of pictures from those days.

This particular picture was taken about 18 years ago. I returned there a few days ago and it's still there! The colours are not as vivid as then, but it is intact. Part of the secret may be that it's now surrounded by a 12 feet fence. There are also a lot of rubbish standing in front of it, so I couldn't take a fresh picture. You will have to believe me on my word.

There is a story to this also. The first time I saw this wall, there was a different painting on it. You will find it on plenty. I thought it was the best I had seen up to that date. When I got the pics, it hadn't turned out quite as well as I hoped, so I returned to make a better one. You can imagine my surprise when I found it like this instead. I have even spoken to the guys who did it. It was done on request, so you can call it a legal Graffiti (most are not).

Graffiti mitt i sta'n ?

Like your city, we have almost no street art either. I love this tho. Good choice.

It's amazing that this is still there 18 years later. It's a nice piece !

Avignon is not in the list (still having trouble registering with CDP) but nevertheless participating in the theme day. I hope you come and visit.

This is one where I'm thinking about: is it beautiful or ugly? I can't decide. Here you can find graffitis especially at train stations, on trains and walls.

Neva said...

This is very nice....aren't you surprised it is there after all these years?

I can't decide if it is beautiful or ugly either, but it looks like it certainly took a lot of work. Amazing that it is still there after so many years; equally amazing you were able to find your old picture! I doubt I would have been able to find one of my pictures that old.

I think this should be classified as a mural not graffiti. mainly because it was done on request (I assume from the owner of the building) ... Very impressive ... Also very impressive that you can find a photo from 18 years ago.

Most times grafitti makes me sad but this one was nice, well made and colurful.

Neva: I was surprised. I thought it might be there - but "destroyed".

Denton & Clueless: I have a special place for those negatives, so I had no problem finding it. I also have a few binders with the photos as well. I once had them on display at work, so many of them are enlarged too. Looks much better that way. B T W Denton, I don't agree on mural (even if it fits the month-theme too). This is definately a piece.

Thanks to the rest of you commenting so far.....

This one is very pretty...I'm glad that you took a photo when it was "at its best".

I imagine this is a quite large one. Compare to the one you posted on another blog, it's really filled up the space and complete the project.
Nice one!

A nice piece of graffiti; so much detail. Amazing that it is still there after all that time.

It looks so cool when I enlarged the photo! very nice street art! great thing its preserved and you preserved your foto. well done!

Ben: It is large. Without having the real measurements right now, I'd say about 15 by 5 meters or so. I was amazed by the size of it. I've seen big ones before, but not in one piece.

Gordon: You should see the original picture.....

Gizelle & Gordon: I am glad too that it's still there. I needed to go there first to make sure. My intention was to take a fresh photo, but as I said - it was not possible.

I always thought "tagging" was just a particular kind of "graffiti" a subset of the species rather than a different genre.

Great colors and it is decorative rather than oppressive. Nice shot.

Thanks to all of you kind enough to leave a comment, and took the time to get to the bottom of the list. We were very near the bottom, so I fully understand if not everyone managed to get there :-)

Amazing to think it could last that long.
