stadshagen hockey

A metro train arriving station Stadshagen. The "corrugated metal thingie" is an artwork depicting the two local rivalling ice hockey teams Djurgården and AIK. If you look from one side you see Djurgården score a goal, and from the other side AIK surely scores behind the Djurgården keeper. The artist is Lasse Lindqvist.

nature strikes back

I think that nature is striving to take back what has been stolen. This house is a good example of that (my garden another). Or is this the famous Greenhouse effect?

långholmsgatan

Långholmsgatan is one of Stockholm's most heavily trafficked streets. It's merely 500 meters long and connects Liljeholmsbron with Västerbron on Södermalm. Its name comes from the island Långholmen - that's the green in the photo.

on royal guard

One of the Royal Guards keeping an eye on things - and on people.

The Royal Guards are responsible, with the police and palace authorities, for guarding The Royal Palace of Stockholm and Drottningholm Palace. They are also part of the defence force of the centre of Stockholm. When guard duties are required, The Royal Guards act as honorary guard to HM the King.

a game of polo

We are used to see polo as a fast game played on horseback. Here's a slower Segway version (which is a bit funny as Swedish slang for something slow is seg - pronounced with a long e).

quite a catch

There are fishermen and there are fishermen. This is Tor's Fishing by Anders Henrik Wissler. Me, I'd be scared stiff if I got something like that on the hook.

A somewhat smaller sibbling to the organ in Adolf Fredrik Church. This has a more secluded spot in the church and I gather it's not used at Sunday sermon.

maritime stockholm

S/S Birger Jarl was launched on 15 January 1953 and named after the 13th century Swedish statesman Birger jarl. After her maiden voyage to Helsinki she started regular service on the routes Stockholm - Helsinki and Stockholm - Turku. Today, M/S Birger Jarl is a cruise ship on service between Stockholm and Mariehamn on the Åland Islands (Finland).

The smaller vessel is Stockholm Ström 2 from 1894 on route from Slussen to Fjäderholmarna - "where the archipelago begins".

old cemetery

Danvik cemetery was inaugurated in 1834 and used up to the first years in the twentieth century. It is assumed that it was a cemetery for the poor and sick who died in Danvik hospital. Unfortunately, the church book remains missing so this can neither be confirmed nor denied.

encounters in Solna

Any subway network worth its salt will have a serious control tower. I may have read to much sci-fi but the entire complex looks rather alien, don't you agree?

Are you a rational, hierarchical top-down kind of person? Or maybe a bottom-up rebel, ready to reinvent without waiting for permission from above? Either way - here's a choice of perspectives, perpendicular to the plane of the horizon. See more?

Café and restaurant Solstugan in Fredhäll is a popular oasis since 1922. Open in the summer months, it offers a beautiful view of the narrows of Lake Mälaren. Yes, it's the small red cottage in the middle of all that green.

The "headquarters" of Stockholm County Council. The council’s mandate is to ensure that Stockholmians have access to health care and public transport as well as to preventing health problems. The Carl Milles sculpture Solsångaren - the sun singer. It was erected in 1926 in memory of Esaias Tegnér's poem Sång till solen (Song to the sun). Tegnér, a writer, professor of Greek language, and bishop was during the 19th century regarded as the father of modern poetry in Sweden.
