balloon season

The warm air balloon season is here. This one came in over Aunty O's Grove (Tantolunden) and turned left over Södermalm (south central) towards the city centre. In the summer you often see swarms of balloons over Stockholm.

The beautiful Katarina kyrka (Church of Catherine) from the 17th century has been rebuilt twice after devastating fires, the most recent one in the 1990's

have you seen my new boat?

...previously on pixels

I wish... Tell you what - If I had that kind of money, I sure as H wouldn't spend it on a boat. The name, you ask? Pelorus - owner Roman Abramovich. Sound familiar? Well, he's the owner of an english football club too... have a look at plenty and we'll get a little closer to the boat.

jazz night out

Saturday night at the very small and cosy Glenn Miller Café. Good music (unfortunately I don't remember the names of the guys playing), good food and drink and good company. It was a good evening out.

cost not an issue

Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a weather station, is it a 1950's car returning to us from another dimension? Our friend Järnladyn (the Iron Lady) recently introduced the concept of a mobile terrace. Maybe that's exactly how the owner considers this little thingy. Stay tuned for more sights of a vehicle slightly out of the ordinary.

depth of field

Standing on the sundeck in Hammarby Sjöstad, looking towards land, the eyes keep going, going, going into the picture, wondering what's at the end. At the map you see this sundeck as a round "dot" in the water.

A view of Sofia Church from Hammarby Sjöstad. The Sjöstad - city by the sea - is an old harbour area that now is a city district in its own right. Pixels have been strolling here many times before.

Spring has sprung. It's all over us. A few rays of sunlight are playing hide and seek in the small, secret garden behind S:t Gertrude's Church in the Old Town.

#1010 for whom the bell tolls

That can be argued, I guess. These might be old fire station bells but I wouldn't bet on it. They're at Lindhagensgatan, right opposite the bus garage. I've been trying to find any facts about them, no luck.

#1009 it's not the sky that's falling on our heads

On 8 August 1993 a Saab JAS 39 Gripen (Griffin) fighter aircraft crashed in this this park during an air show. The plane was a test aircraft (Gripen came into active service in 1998) and the show was a part of a huge city festival - the Stockholm Water Festival - with thousands and thousands of people out and about. Miraculously no one was hurt. On the exact spot is a sculpture by Thomas Qvarsebo and in the background you see Västerbron and Södermalm (south central). Here is a photo taken immediately after the crash.

These are no windows, I think they're some kind of wind breakers? Possibly just an installation. What do I know about art...? Nevertheless they make a smashing picture, with the late sun shining through them.

#1006 far far away

Stockholm is more than nice architecture and old buildings, parks, waterways and century old boats in an often stunning scenery. Stockholm is also suburbs and the places beyond the suburbs. Like here, downtown Åkersberga, some 30 kilometres north of Stockholm. The photo does not do Åkersberga justice. It's nice in some places.

Pressbyrån is a chain of convenience stores which might be difficult to find in some countries. Rather than visiting separate stores to obtain your newspaper, your banana and your soft drink, you will find it all under one roof. Here is Alvik Square with Pressbyrån to the left and a couple of letterboxes (blue for local mail, yellow for the rest) in the foreground.

#1004 cemetery time (2)

There are not only gravestones and massive grave chambers at the Northern Cemetery. Every now and then you can see some "lighter" monuments. This is in memory of Betty Pettersson, Sweden's first female student (1871). There is also a beautiful stone over one of the victims in the tsunami 2004, which I choose not to show though. Those of you who visit this cemetery will find it. It's all blue and in the shape of a wave. Very nice stone. It made me stop and think for a while, how we often take life for granted, and how quickly it can be taken away...

#1001 the Great Church

Slowly we are walking home after the celebrating #1000. The city, some parts go back to the thirteenth century, that we love and show every day is starting to tuck in. Storkyrkan - The Great Church - raises itself over the Old Town. The church, first mentioned in writing in 1279, is today the cathedral of Stockholm. Some things don't change. This is post #1001 and counting.

Yes, we have shown Storkyrkan before. See also Wikipedia.

#1000 stockholm by us

#1000 on pixels since 19 October 2005

A thousand photos is a lot. Finding highlights in that pile isn't entirely easy and it's perfectly subjective of course. Still, we tried. These are some of our own favorite shots. You can find them all in our personal top-20 lists:

20 by per

A special thanks to our guests Kenneth, Patrik, Michael, Christer and Pia who have enriched this blog. Most of all, our sincere gratitude goes out to you - our readers. Without you, this little idea in October 2005 wouldn't have taken off at all.

Discovering and sharing Stockholm through text and photos has been a unique experience and we like to think the best is yet to come. So stay tuned for more of stockholm by pixels. Tomorrow, photo #1001.

Time to go to a cemetery again. This time the Northern Cemetery. This grave chamber door looks as if it could have been in Lord of the Rings. I have never seen anything like it, except in that film. It's stunning. More to come from this place, both here and on plenty.

There are similarities, don't you think? When I first saw this piece of art, I immediately thought of the starfighters from Star Wars. I wonder if this artist had the same thoughts in his/her mind when this was created? It's located outside the Television house at Oxenstiernsgatan.
