pink ribbon manifestation

Torches were lit in thousands in a fund raiser for the pink ribbon. You could buy one for 40 SEK out of which 35 goes to the cancer fund. Last year there were about 10,000. I'm not sure how many there were this year.

taxinge church

Remember the lost clergyman ? This is where he was supposed to be. The church was completed in 1690. Over the years it was worn down and in 1861 it was decided to rebuild it. The new gothic church was inaugurated in 1863. The interior was renovated some 20 years ago. See more?

a walk in the park

Södermalmsparkernas vänner - Friends of the parks in Södermalm - has invited to an open tour of the parks and scenes of the district Södermalm. The association's chairman Bitte Liberg is speaking through the megaphone. In the background is the Norwegian church Kronprinsesse Marthas Kirke. It was a good walk, informative and long.

Kista Science Tower revisited

Revisiting the 32-storey show-off in the high tech village Kista north of Stockholm city. Kista Science Tower is a conference and office complex of six buildings offering some 39,000 square metres of floor area. All buildings are triangular shaped. The tallest building - the tower - is the highest office building in the Nordic countries (156 metres) with the fastest lifts in Sweden (5-6 metres/second).

it's Hedvig again

Hedvig Eleonora Church as seen from Jungfrugatan ("Virgin street"). The church has been pixeled before, like in the post "Hedvig standing tall".

The two metro/underground bridges in Kista, north of Stockholm city. Kista is mainly associated with telecommunication and computer industry. It also hosts the IT University, a joint venture between the Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University. Because of its computer industries, Kista became referred to as Chipsta or Sweden's Silicon Valley in the 1980's.

city jungle

text & photo: Jenny Lingstam

Well, they do call it "the city jungle". But I guess some take it more literally than others.

jam session

You can make jam or jelly. Or just admire the rowan berries and leave them for the birds to enjoy on one of those colder days to come at Bollmora Cemetery.

the Riga connection

The MS Silja Festival is one of two Tallink ferries serving the route between Stockholm and Riga, Latvia. We're looking west-south-west from Larsberg, Lidingö. Can you spot any churches?

"Your body language is telling me you’re uncomfortable."

Next to Vaxholm Church, this tree has a privileged and somewhat protected location. Still, I wonder how many leaves have fallen since that sunny Friday. In fact, trees could use some therapy. Imagine losing your exquisite costume each and every year! See more?

70's coffee break

A coffee break at the Garnisonen - "the Garrison" - conference place. It offers, as they say on their web, "a trendy, modern and original ambiance with a unique 70's feel".

no more dancing

The gates to the local peoples park in Nykvarn. It's been here since 1911. This is where you used to go at Saturday night to dance or listen to the local entertainment (well others too, to be honest). Today the gates are mostly closed, due to bad economy.

ship to shore

text & photo: Kenta Jönsson

Here is another view from Rödlöga. The picture is taken from the village where you can see this old landing-stage. I think it was used to pull up boats to shore, a long time ago. See more?

big machine

A machine that would make Bob the Builder green of envy, used for drilling holes in the rock. The holes are drilled in a large tunnel shaped circle, filled with explosives and ... bang. It's all part of the City Line, a six kilometres long tunnel for commuter trains under the city.

the sky's the limit

High-rise buildings are few and far between around Stockholm. Here's one in an odd location. The hotel in Infra City is located 20 km north of the city center. It has 320 rooms and a splendid view overlooking a boring motorway.

where no one can hear you play

The kids have left and the sun is setting. Suddenly that familiar playground doesn't look quite so inviting anymore. Almost like something out of a creepy movie.

Maria mountain

Mariaberget - Maria mountain - and the façades of Mariahissen and Laurinska house seen from Söder Mälarstrand. The mountain is approximately 50 meters high and part of south central Södermalm. If you have heard of Stieg Larsson's The Millennium-trilogy, this is where the good guys and girls live their lives.

where did the track go?

Since 1974 there has been no more departures from Taxinge-Näsby station. It had a quite short lifetime. The trains started to run around 1895 but were initially not planned to pass here. Want a better view of the station?

want to trade ?

I have no idea what these kids just bought but they rushed over to this bench, eager to open and compare their recent purchases. What's your guess?

I'll Find My Way Home

The full moon offers a bit of unnecessary navigational assistance as another ferry rushes from Rindö to join a sister vessel already moored in Vaxholm.

autumn is coming

You know that autumn is just around the corner when your neighbours hang out their jackets to air on the balcony. And after autumn comes winter. That is definitely a drawback of this country. On the other hand, some people like it.

Turinge church

This is the main church in Nykvarn Municipality. There are two others, but none as old as this one. The oldest parts are from the 12th century and like many churches it has been extended. In 1802 lightning struck the old churchtower and it had to be rebuilt.

Unfortunately the church was closed on this day, even though I did encounter a clergyman outside asking me if I was a guest for the baptism he was supposed to perform in about 10 minutes. Turned out though that he was sent to the wrong church, and had to rush away to the right one. We'll check on that one a little later.

Swedish riksdag

A wooden model of our Parliament (riksdag). The two main buildings are located on the small oval island Helgeandsholmen. Separated by Riksgatan (Kingdom street), the lower square building was originally the bi-chamber assembly and the upper rounded used to be the Riksbank (Swedish National Bank). That building now holds the unicameral assembly hall. The large square on the left is the Royal Palace where the king works.
