not your average (red) sofa

This rather oversized sofa was standing in Kungsträdgården during a week called "A Taste of Stockholm". The park was transformed into a giant food court, where restaurants from all over Stockholm had put up stands where they served small portions of different kinds of food. This has become a yearly event and depending on the weather it pulls out people by the thousands. The sofa is an advertisement for one of Stockholm's three free morning papers.

Riddarholmen in February

photo: Michael Zucker
.The sun sets gracefully by Riddarholmen. Our Friday Guest takes us half a year back. Or is it half a year into the future? The huge differences between four distinct seasons make our climate ever fascinating. Riddarholmen is a small islet, rich in history,
in the centre of Stockholm.

spam, spam, spam, egg and spam

Hötorgshusen are seldom out of sight.
We call them spam scrapers.

"hey! you down there..."

- This is my lamp-post. Don't you dare come too close
or I'll come down and get you...
I guess that could be what s/he is shouting about but who knows?
The lamp-post is definitely found on Norrmalmstorg,
a few hundred meters from the absolute city. It's magnificent.

stockholm by waves
Composing an espresso at the Gazzetta tobacconist, betting shop and café by Hamngatan. Some people argue that you can't get a regular cup of coffee nowadays - it's only espresso and latte and such. They are of course wrong. There are still some pockets of resistance serving the regular filtered coffee. Sweden is number two in the world (after Finland) when it comes to drinking coffee
(156 litres of java per person last year).

Summer Night City (5)

A calm evening by Bollstanäsvägen. Possibly the last opportunity before summer to enjoy the stillness of night
without the company of mosquitos.
Kom, ska du få höra
De sjunger i ditt öra
Att suga blod och friden störa
(Lågprispoesi för talträngda, volym 136)

muffin, anyone?

I suppose the muffins are fresh at this place. Nice surroundings too. I would have tried them but I was short on time.
Fridhemsgatan is the address as you can clearly see.
.Muffinsbageri med servering på gräsmattan utanför.
Synd att jag inte hann att testa. Det får bli en annan gång.

I get my morning paper delivered to my door. I read it and then put it in a pile. When the pile gets too high I put my papers in a green container at Borgargatan. When that container is full it is collected and taken to - I don't know where, but it is made into new paper.
It works quite well, actually.

looking down on Downtown

It's May and we're almost back here again. This is a view
towards Riddarfjärden with the inner city behind the water.
"Tänkte mig att fånga kontrasten mellan förgrund, pontonerna i vattnet
och city i fjärran", berättar vår nye gästströfvare Michael

nothing to hide

Who is watching whom? Not everything is what it appears to be.
Is it my imagination or did the mannequin just blink?
Watching them, watching us.
Har du något att dölja?

help please ?

- I seem to have lost a shoe. Would someone please help me to put it on again?

This shoeless horse was found on the square at Blasieholmsgatan

little orange men

Little orange men digging a hole in Birger Jarlsgatan.
I'm sure they know what they are doing.

Summer Night City (4)

Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786) was a pharmaceutical chemist who discovered various substances. In this night view of Vasagatan we see a pharmacy which is open 7x24 and bears Scheele’s name.

Det finns danska biffar i kvarteret också

This street-musician seems to have fled the scene. He was probably taking a short break from the sun.

VIP evening

Just a few steps away from where Michael took his photo we see a VIP evening in a design and fashion shop. One lady was not invited so she hurries home. This part of Stockholm South is full of trendy designers (Efva Attling has a shop here) and galleries.

Stockholm is not your average flatland. An older version of the busy Hornsgatan offers good exercise (at least when you walk uphill) as well as interesting architecture. Söder – the southern part of the city – is rich in cultural heritage.

your flag here

There’s no shortage of political demonstrations on and around Sergels Torg, the square which is widely regarded as a symbolic center of the city as well as the country. This flag was on display at a small pro-Palestinian event.
Undras just om man lyckades.

hatched by now ?

. Couldn't resist this one. It's the Parliament house in the background and from last year actually. Probably part of some art exhibition. If not - what kind of bird might lay these eggs? Ostrich perhaps but I doubt they would get up in that nest. Maybe it's some pre-historic bird? Anyway they're gone now.
Wonder what became of them...

Beauty and the Beast

The beauty and the beast at a café. I will not divulge who is who.

Summer Night City (3)

Night falls by Växhuset, a day care centre in northern Sollentuna. Their name alludes to the Swedish word for greenhouse: ”växthus”. A house for growing. Surely kids will do most of the growing. But the company also emphasizes their vision as a great employer.
Their staff might want some room for inner growth as well.
We’ve been here twice before.

from below

This is a "Virginia creeper" (according to the dictionary) on a house
by Eriksbergsgatan. It does look strange, doesn't it?
.Grodperspektiv är kul ibland. Här är det vildvin på en fasad.
Oftast ser man det mer framifrån.

Salong Sir

Early morning shaving at Salong Sir.

37 days

How much is a day worth? This girl had to leave us after five weeks.
37 days, a life. I found the little stone in Bollmora.

A boy and a girl in equally striped T-shirts take a rest on the jetty after eating take-away salad. Photographed from Strandvägen.

Summer Night City (2)

At last some calm after another busy day by the Central Station.
The moon surveys the scene as our city prepares
for that big, messy project when local railroads
will finally get a reasonable capacity.

I'm Da Man

I don't settle for guest-appearances. I'm Da Man, I demand space of my own. In my case a circle. Maybe even a winner's circle?

climbing the beer mountain

Some guys practising mountaineering at Münchenbryggeriet (the Munich Brewery). There used to be a brewery here from the mid 1800's up to the early 1900's but since 1979 the building contains offices. I worked here from 1985 to 1991.

spring is in the air

Paying another visit by the Engelbrekt Church.
Half the city is water. The rest is green. Well, basically.
Trädkramare är vi allihopa. Särskilt på Östermalm.

Peter's already got us pointed out as the hunters. This was my prey.

daily photo theme day: view from my bedroom

The Liljeholmen Bridge opening its driveway one night to let a vessel leave Lake Mälaren. As seen from my bedroom window. The lighty thing to the left of the lamppost is the tail of the ship.
