daily photo theme day: Woodland Cemetery

This is a view from Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery). It's the largest cemetery in Sweden with approximately 90,000 graves and several chapels. Skogskyrkogården was inaugurated in 1920 and the wooden landscape was shaped before 1940. The graves are divided into grave quarters. In the summertime you can go on a guided tour here. It's also one of the UNESCO World Heritages. Among the famous people buried here you will find actress Greta Garbo and football-player Lennart "Nacka" Skoglund. See more?

Goodness! Your photo must qualify as having the most graves today! Extraordinary photo. Well done - and interesting commentary too. I'm sure Greta Garbo's grave must get a lot of visitors.

ah the dear Greta Garbo, I was thinking of her the other day when our coach driver on a day trip took a detour through Poulton=le-Fylde - http://geraldengland.co.uk/pick/pick24.htm

I didn't know about Greta Garbo...Trees and graves, a good association, so rare in France.

It looks gorgeous nestled in amongst the trees.

After reading your description of how large this cemetery is, it occurred to me there is a misquote attributed to Garbo, "I want to be alone." Well, she sure isn't in this place! I've read that she really said "I want to be let alone." I wonder how many visit her grave? Beautiful setting and photo!

Wow, so many headstones ... 90k in one cemetery is hard to imagine.

Oh I love the Woodland Cemetery, it's truly magical in so many ways, wistful, sad and beautiful. Did a blogpost about it myself quite some time ago, it's very much a place for contemplation - and those guided tours, highly recommended:)

Nice picture!

90,000 graves, wow that is a lot. The cemetery I posted on has less than 45 people buried there. Quite a contrast.

What a beautiful day for the photo. The graves look very close to each other.

Very different from our cemetery.

I agree with Jilly, this is an exquisite photo you have shared with us. I especially am glad to know the final resting place of Greta Garbo. Thank you.

From the picture this cemetery really looks dense. Just different from I've seen so far. Nice shot!

It does look pretty busy there - so many tombs. Oh Greta...

It is a very special shot from a special place. I don't believe Bernt is online so, on his behalf, thanks for all your comments. Those of you who clicked the link "see more" already know that we'll be showing more from Skogskyrkogården in the coming weeks. Thanks all for another good theme day.

i love the congested graves looks so beautiful.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to comment. I really liked this one myself, the lady walking among all the headstones. It turned out as well as I saw it when the picture appeared.

Yes, there are a lot of graves there, and yes, they are quite close, but not THAT close. See what a camera can do with a little distance ;-)

Greta Garbo's grave needs a visit. I couldn't find it among the rest, but I know now where to go. It might turn up....

PiaK: The guided tour might be interesting, even if you see a lot during a few hours there, it's always nice to get some information as well.

Sorry for the late response, but I have been on a short holiday (with no computer)

Say again? Going on a short vacation without a computer? You mean like... um... without any computer at all? ;)

Welcome back, Bernt.

Thanks for visiting my blog and leading me to yours! Very interesting story behind this cemetery. It's crowded, yes, but judging by your photo, it's also very unique.

It looks like it could be a terrific resource for families doing history of ancestors. I would hope that they have a very good directory there in order to find the gravesites.

stromsjo said...

They do have a good directory service (that's part of what Bernt reported in his Swedish comment) and you're right Kate about that being a necessity for this kind of huge cemetery.

Talking about heritages, our fellow blogger Pia just did an extensive post about *another* local world heritage.
