An art student recently got his fifteen minutes of fame by videotaping his act of vandalizing a subway car. Other artists help brighten our everyday life through their unique contributions. Ever since 1994, these 17 bench-like sculptures made from unpolished granite by Richard Nonas have made Skarpnäck subway station an intriguing venue for geometry and perspectives. There was quite a bit of controversy in the media when this occurred. What made the matter worse was that the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design failed to distance themselves clearly from this deed. There is a press release available now (about the video and how it was allowed to be part of their official exhibition) which still does not makes matters clear:
"Questions were posed at the examination regarding the student’s role in the creation of the piece. The student refused to provide information about this. For this reason it is unknown whether the work came about as a part of a criminal deed, or just depicted such an act. It is unclear whether or not Konstfack should have allowed this work to be exhibited in that case and if there were legal grounds for this reason to fail the work."

Jacob: There are many examples of how art has been successfully introduced into our subway and this is certainly one of the best. The entire station is a pearl, we'll return here in a week or two.

cieldequimper: Yes, they can be used as benches as well but I haven't seen anyone actually do this. Except for myself of course, I did try it out.
JM: Glad you appreciate this. (I wouldn't want to speculate about the outcome of the vandal video, you might want to check out the link I provided above. Suffice to say, it's a sad story and it certainly hasn't improved the public perception of art and art education.)
