stranded whales

Summer is here and so is the season for flying balloon in - or rather above - Stockholm. When the balloons are being prepared - everybody is giving a helping hand - they pretty much look like gigantic stranded whales. This evening five balloons started from the same field south of the city. We were lucky and the winds would bring us all across central Stockholm. More to come ...

floor or roof ?

I think the pillars might be a clue. Of course it's a roof. The church on Skeppsholmen is only a church by name. It's not used any more for cermons, as a matter of fact you can rent it for parties if you like. I went there some days ago, expecting to find a closed door, but it was open. And guess what - rented for a private party.

Göta Canal

Say hello to M/S Diana! She will take you on a journey from Stockholm to the west coast city Gothenburg over a 390 kilometres long system of canals, lakes and rivers. 190 kilometres will be the Göta Canal built in the early 19th century by Baltzar von Platen. 90 kilometres of the Göta Canal was dug by hand, the difference in level is 91,8 metres and the number of locks is 58.

stockholm city bikes

A thousand city bikes are waiting at scores of stations all over the city. Here's a photo from the station at Slussen. You can borrow one of these bikes for a maximum of three hours. But first you need a bike card which will last all season if you pay roughly 25 Euro. A free helmet is included.

The cemetery is a sanctuary. Peaceful and quiet. Some have it even more peaceful than others. Why rest with the rest of the crowd, when you can have it all for yourself? My guess is that this lot will be filled eventually too.

daily photo theme day: subway baker

This is a photo of my local bakery at the Hornstull metro station. It has a minimalistic shop selling bread in all colours and shapes and outside, in the 'subway area', you can sit down and have a coffee and a bun or cake. On the way home from work I sometimes stop and buy some fresh bread for my evening tea. To the left of the bakery is a flower shop, on the opposite a barber, a cobbler and a Pressbyrån convenience store.
