summer night city: the sergel bathtub

Sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel died 1814 but his name lives on in our minds. Here's the well-known obelisk and fountain at Sergel Square in the still of another magic Nordic summer night.

summer night city: sápmi exhibition

...previously on pixels

The Sami are one people in four countries. At Nordiska museet (the Nordic Museum) on Djurgården is an exhibition about Sami life in Sweden. It's open seven days a week, however not at this time of night so we stayed outside admiring the renovation effort going on around the entrance. The real deal of course is the Sami museum Ajtte in Jokkmokk, a mere 1036 km north of Stockholm...

Karlaplan (or "Charles' Plaza") is an open park oasis at Östermalm where five streets intersect in a way resembling star patterns in cities like Paris. Here's the entrance to the subway station which opened in 1967.

Kaknästornet is the hub of Swedish television, radio and satellite broadcasting. With its 155 metres (170 including the mast) it was until recently the tallest building in Scandinavia. Turning Torso in Malmö is now the tallest building with 190 metres.

gatekeeping

Taking you (and your boat) to a new level, the 75 meters long Karl Johanslussen ("Lock of Charles John") acts as an interface between the two water bodies Lake Mälaren and Saltsjön. Here is one of the sluice gates in action. Mind your head!

hold your horses

This herd of concrete horses were found outside Rissne Gård, a small restaurant in the northern outskirts of Stockholm. It reminds a little of the rack they have outside saloons in the old Western movies. Back then they couldn't bring their horses along inside either. To be honest, I don't really know to what purpose these four are standing there. Probably to prevent cars from parking too close to the gate.

it's all about hot air

photo: Peter Häggström

... previously on pixels

Well, this is what makes it fly - hot air. This balloon could carry 5000 kilos. Impressing, isn’t it? See more balloons?

With this post we conclude our fantastic hot air balloon series. With a little luck maybe we can persuade Peter Häggström to come back another time.

astrolab

Astrolab is a sculpture by Alby Square. It's an astronomical instrument decorated with hundreds of ceramic plates, most of them painted by children in local schools and some made by the artist Mattias Larsson. A nice example of participatory art. Citizens take part in the creative process as opposed to just passively admiring the result of someone else's work. Read more about helping all achieve their full potential on the Botkyrka municipality web site.

football - larger than life ?

If you ask some people they would definitely say YES. Especially now that the European Championships have started. Hopefully they have smaller balls than this one or there will be no goals at all. But it makes a good symbol. And, yes, Sweden is participating and let's hope for a successful journey.

mid-month theme: subway day

The Stockholm subway network consists of a hundred stations, some of them quite remote from the city. Alby station (opened 1975, map link below, see more?) in the Botkyrka municipality is a 33 minutes' ride away from the Subway Central. The artist Olle Ängkvist decided to create a "cave of secrets" with painted flowers, secret signs and symbols. And here's a labyrinth.

subway day is a mid-month theme shared by the following blogs:

summer night city: sleepless at skeppsholmen

Skeppsholmen ("the Ships' Islet") is a small island once considered militarily strategic at the Baltic Sea entrance to Stockholm. We tend to return here again and again but I've never been here before at midnight. What can I say? Our summer night city is magic.

a taste of Stockholm

A Taste of Stockholm - a huge food feast - took place June 4-8 in Kungsträdgården. The 27 participating restaurants served more than 200 different dishes as well as a lot of wine and beer to some 300.000 visitors. Three to four free music concerts were also held each day.

national day - balloons everywhere

The 6th of June is Sweden's national day. It has not been celebrated so long, I mean in the sense of being a day off from work. This is the fifth year. In Stockholm 50,000 balloons were released. Many had already blown up due to the heat while waiting for their freedom. It sounded like someone was making popcorn, only the smell was strange. It looked great though and was well worth going into town for, even if it meant having to struggle to get somewhere.

stranded whales

photo: Peter Häggström

Summer is here and so is the season for flying balloon in - or rather above - Stockholm. When the balloons are being prepared - everybody is giving a helping hand - they pretty much look like gigantic stranded whales. This evening five balloons started from the same field south of the city. We were lucky and the winds would bring us all across central Stockholm. More to come ...

floor or roof ?

I think the pillars might be a clue. Of course it's a roof. The church on Skeppsholmen is only a church by name. It's not used any more for cermons, as a matter of fact you can rent it for parties if you like. I went there some days ago, expecting to find a closed door, but it was open. And guess what - rented for a private party.

Göta Canal

Say hello to M/S Diana! She will take you on a journey from Stockholm to the west coast city Gothenburg over a 390 kilometres long system of canals, lakes and rivers. 190 kilometres will be the Göta Canal built in the early 19th century by Baltzar von Platen. 90 kilometres of the Göta Canal was dug by hand, the difference in level is 91,8 metres and the number of locks is 58.

A thousand city bikes are waiting at scores of stations all over the city. Here's a photo from the station at Slussen. You can borrow one of these bikes for a maximum of three hours. But first you need a bike card which will last all season if you pay roughly 25 Euro. A free helmet is included.

daily photo theme day: subway baker

This is a photo of my local bakery at the Hornstull metro station. It has a minimalistic shop selling bread in all colours and shapes and outside, in the 'subway area', you can sit down and have a coffee and a bun or cake. On the way home from work I sometimes stop and buy some fresh bread for my evening tea. To the left of the bakery is a flower shop, on the opposite a barber, a cobbler and a Pressbyrån convenience store.

Thanks for stopping by, be sure to visit our fellow city photobloggers across the globe on this theme day. The June theme is "my corner local shop". 173 blogs have signed up to join today.
