Karlaplan (or "Charles' Plaza") is an open park oasis at Östermalm where five streets intersect in a way resembling star patterns in cities like Paris. Here's the entrance to the subway station which opened in 1967.

Taking you (and your boat) to a new level, the 75 meters long Karl Johanslussen ("Lock of Charles John") acts as an interface between the two water bodies Lake Mälaren and Saltsjön. Here is one of the sluice gates in action. Mind your head!

Astrolab is a sculpture by Alby Square. It's an astronomical instrument decorated with hundreds of ceramic plates, most of them painted by children in local schools and some made by the artist Mattias Larsson. A nice example of participatory art. Citizens take part in the creative process as opposed to just passively admiring the result of someone else's work. Read more about helping all achieve their full potential on the Botkyrka municipality web site.

The Stockholm subway network consists of a hundred stations, some of them quite remote from the city. Alby station (opened 1975, map link below, see more?) in the Botkyrka municipality is a 33 minutes' ride away from the Subway Central. The artist Olle Ängkvist decided to create a "cave of secrets" with painted flowers, secret signs and symbols. And here's a labyrinth.

Skeppsholmen ("the Ships' Islet") is a small island once considered militarily strategic at the Baltic Sea entrance to Stockholm. We tend to return here again and again but I've never been here before at midnight. What can I say? Our summer night city is magic.

A Taste of Stockholm - a huge food feast - took place June 4-8 in Kungsträdgården. The 27 participating restaurants served more than 200 different dishes as well as a lot of wine and beer to some 300.000 visitors. Three to four free music concerts were also held each day.

The 6th of June is Sweden's national day. It has not been celebrated so long, I mean in the sense of being a day off from work. This is the fifth year. In Stockholm 50,000 balloons were released. Many had already blown up due to the heat while waiting for their freedom. It sounded like someone was making popcorn, only the smell was strange. It looked great though and was well worth going into town for, even if it meant having to struggle to get somewhere.

A thousand city bikes are waiting at scores of stations all over the city. Here's a photo from the station at Slussen. You can borrow one of these bikes for a maximum of three hours. But first you need a bike card which will last all season if you pay roughly 25 Euro. A free helmet is included.
