Astrolab is a sculpture by
Alby Square. It's an astronomical instrument decorated with hundreds of ceramic plates, most of them painted by children in local schools and some made by the artist Mattias Larsson. A nice example of participatory art. Citizens take part in the creative process as opposed to just passively admiring the result of someone else's work. Thank you Per for going by Underground all the way to Alby and using your camera for Astrolab!
The year when Astrolab was made was a most busy and creative year at Albyskolan. All the pupils made a plate each and they had a hard job with thinking, planning, learning and making it.They had to study books and ask their teachers and others.
Most of them had very serious ideas about their plate and I am sure they now and then walk the stairs up to Astrolab to see their plate and remember the others. And when they get children they will show them too.
Astrolab also shows the time - it is a sun-clock ( what´s the English word for solur?)
People living and working in Alby are proud of Astrolab!

Small world! I didn't have a clue about the fact that one of our regular readers was involved in creating this sculpture. Thanks Lena for the story behind the sundial (I believe that's the word).
