With only 126 permanent residents, Furusund in Norrtälje Municipality is a humble village as well as an island located 92 kilometers north-east of Stockholm. Many Swedes will remember the song Waltz in Furusund by author-composer-singer Evert Taube. From here, the road continues to the island Yxlan courtesy of double-ended ferries like this one. See more?

Most of these ferries are considered part of the public road network and financed through our taxes. But there's also an option to request a departure of your own - outside the regular schedule. That will cost you, of course.
Vogon Poet: I haven't had many encounters with them but these ferries certainly represent vital infrastructure for residents (or visitors) in the archipelago.

Buenos Aires Photoblog: I guess it's fair to say that the year in the archipelago has two phases. Several months with a limited population of permanent residents and then, all of a sudden, an invasion of tourists and summer residents. The sign says that you're not allowed to pass the road gate. You'd have to wait until a couple of minutes before departure - in this case at 1AM.

I've never been in Sweden but, as I really love water, I think it must be great travelling around Stockholm, having so many islands, bridges and ferries everywhere!
I love to ride ferries in the night...kinda spooky, though. How does one get to the islands in the winter...ice breakers?
This particular night was rather foggy, you will notice this if you take a closer look.

cieldequimper: A wish no doubt shared by those car drivers waiting in line behind that silly photographer who appeared out of nowhere and started snapping photos of the old ferry in the middle of the night! ;)
JM: Spot on! I'd say the water and the archipelago are our predominant attractions. Hope you get a chance to stop by one day.
Jacob: We used to have serious winters but these days ice doesn't seem to be a major issue anymore. In the case of this particular strait, there are major ferries to and from Finland passing by right here several times per day plus these smaller ferries at least once an hour... so no, the ice wouldn't stand a chance.
