Heart Of Glass

Väsbyhem is a real estate company which owns some 7 900 flats. All the properties are located within the municipality of Upplands Väsby. To become a tenant you have to be registered in a queue for flats and you also have to pay an annual fee while waiting. Their office is a glassy thing located in the intersection between Centralvägen and Industrivägen.

Why do people want to live in these apartments/flats? Is it because they are cheaper than other commercial apartments?

In NYC, we have a quasi-government housing project called the Mitchel-Lama Buildings. These are low-cost housings that are built to help middle-class people live in NYC. There are maximum income requirements, ie. you cannot make more than $60,000 per year or something like that.

Do people in Sweden tend to rent or do they prefer to buy? Is there a variation around the country? In CH, that is definitely the case, with some cantons with much higher homeownership than others.

I have the same question as Ming. Why are the apartments owned by this company in such demand?

This could turn into an essay and has been subject to a lot of debate during the recent decades.

In a nutshell, there's a shortage. The reason, at least if you ask me, is that the housing sector has been influenced by various political intentions and, consequently, there's is not a well functioning market.

The fraction of apartments being rented is declining. This company, Väsbyhem, is part of that politically influenced sector with a social agenda. So they still offer flats for rent.

You might also want to check out my recent post about the "million program". Same story, different suburb, basically.

Thanks for commenting!

The Salems: I think this is primarily office space and it’s not that huge really. The perspective sometimes tricks us into believing otherwise.

A view of central Upplands Väsby, including this building, can be found in this post on plenty – our sidekick blog.

I liked this one, Per. You have a way with low angled photography.
